Writing a Manifesto

It is incredibly difficult for me to write my manifesto. So much so that I have begun to question whether or not I need one. What value will writing a manifesto give me?

It’s an important question to ask. After all, if my answer is “not much”, I no longer have a dilemma!

Answering the question provided me with a twofold benefit. Firstly, I took the opportunity to read other people’s manifestos and read some beautiful, insightful, smart and funny work. Secondly, I felt justified in procrastinating from crafting my own manifesto because – hello? Research.

So I did my research, analysed my findings, drew some conclusions and decided a course of action.

The research was fun. The analysis lead me to realise that I prefer ‘poster’ type formats with dramatic fonts, clever words, imaginative layouts. I have pinned a stack of them on my Pinterest board.

My conclusions were:

  • I want to do the thinking required to write one
  • I want to clarify and understand my own motivations
  • I want to be able to articulate my purpose
  • It will enrich the context of my life
  • I will feel clever and creative

My recommended course of action is:

Write my manifesto.
